~ I was stunned when David Bowie passed away. Such a great artist and so prolific. I’d no accomplishments and decided to put pen to paper, my thoughts. The words started to feel like poems and then songs started to form. Then came an (ongoing) series of coincidences; Watching a documentary about the Voyager aircraft (listening to Willie Nelson’s “Borderline”, specifically the lyric “paint the Sistine Chapel on the head of a pin”, tripped me out). I was writing a protest song about how from the beginning of time, most of all our leaders found war and the suffering it brings to be the answer. Then I supposed that perhaps all of our lost souls could, theoretically, be on/in one atom and that could be on the Voyager. I read Carl Sagan’s book about Voyager and the history of humanity’s exploration of our lands and then our seas and then space and everything that was on the Golden Record. A biography about Glen Gould on tv, then a search for a melody on his Voyager addition, Bach’s Fugue in C major. No melody I could discern, just mathematics. Elements of a song were in place, but everything was at a standstill.

One of the people I work with made mention of a recording studio in our town, Cymatic Sound Studio, and that the recording engineer, Allen Giardinelli, played weekends at his family restaurant. I went to introduce myself. His promotional poster in the window described his bent for “Gypsy Jazz, Delta Blues and Beyond”. I listened to his trio’s renditions of Django Rheinhardt…amazing! He agreed to meet with me the next week at his studio.

He took my thoughts and laid down backing tracks. He brought in session players and two sisters that were primarily gospel singers. This changed the dynamic of a folkie/protest song to a soulful/protest that the more I listened to sounded like an Elton John song. I’ve always loved his “Friends” recording from the early 70’s and kept thinking about Glenn Gould’s love of Petula Clark’s voice. An interesting mix of artist performances. The fact that Voyager/Redemption paled did not deter my desire to create as best I could.

~ Atlas – Curious about Marco Polo’s transcontinental route to the Far East. Snuck in a, “hey Charles” to Charles Atlas (body builder), and I wanted to

hear Tonya say “Marco Polo”. The terrifying swimming pool game. Blindfolded in deep water, indeed.

~ Buzz – True story about my neighbor. From dawn ’til dusk he rides his bike…
