In early 1917, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band made the first jazz recording. Over the next 100 years we have heard transcendent leaps of creativity and staggering virtuosity; we have experienced the music of crushing pain, breathless romance, anger, exhilaration and humor. “Jazz at 100” is that story – one hundred years of jazz recordings – in 100 one-hour programs that will present representative music from a century of recorded jazz history. The series will explore the broad sweep of that narrative; its representative and its idiosyncratic players; its durable movements and dead ends; its popular recordings and rarities. Brought to you from the studios of WTJU at the University of Virginia.

Just what is The Saturday Night Fish Fry, anyway? For one thing, it’s the title of a 1949 recording by Louis Jordan and His Tympani Five; the short answer is that it’s the story of a New Orleans jam session that gets out of control. In order to appreciate it fully, ya just gotta hear it!

Here we present re-broadcasts of Neal Murray’s classic radio show from WHRV in southern Virginia.

The “big bands” have always been with us, but during the 1930s and 1940s they virtually owned popular music. The Swing Era, in particular defined American popular music from about 1935 to 1945. This program presents highlights throughout this era, but ranges further afield to include singers, bands and musicians as they evolve from their swing roots into some of the most popular music stars in the world – people like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstine, Benny Goodman, Harry James, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and more. We also reach back into the 1920s to explore the beginnings of the Jazz Age and blues.

WoodWarbler’s JazzGrass hosted by Brian Aust in Plainfield, VT is a rich musical exploration of how bluegrass can be linked to jazz along a shape-shifting continuum of newgrass, new acoustic & jamgrass sounds. Starting with traditional bluegrass and ending up in all that jazz connotes, WoodWarbler’s JazzGrass travels down the David Grisman > Django Reinhardt sonic continuum. Often thematic and always illuminating, JazzGrass offers listeners fabulous sounds of bluegrass, jazz and artists that blend these along with other styles together.

The Quiet Storm is a relaxing two-hour melange of Smooth Jazz (Boney James, Brian Culbertson, Najee, Grover Washington, Jr., Bob Baldwin, etc.) and Cool R&B (Brian McKnight, Ledisi, Robin Thicke, Ginuwine, Gerald Albright, etc.) with occasional dashes of soft Adult Contemporary and New Age.

Two major features of the show are “The Smooth Jazz Featured Artist of the Week” – which, as its name implies, is a three-song Smooth Jazz set by an artist being highlighted for a given week – and “The Way-Back Machine,” three classic Soul, Funk, R&B and Dance tunes picked from a vast archive dating back 50 years.
